Edmonton Heights Neighborhood Revitalization Project



Housing Construction/Rehabilitation--Blighted properties will be purchased, significantly rehabbed, and sold to low-to -moderate income families. Sale of the houses will provide revenue for the AAMU CDC to acquire and rehab additional properties after the HUD HBCU grant period to further sustain the AAMU CDC.

  

Edmonton Heights Housing Rehabilitation Project

An Owner-Occupied Housing Rehabilitation Program in which financial assistance will be provided to 10 homeowners to repair/renovate exterior housing problems. The financial assistance will consist of a 50 percent grant and 50 percent low-interest loan for each homeowner. Loan repayment will help sustain the program after the grant period ends.


New Construction of Affordable Multi-Family and Single-Family Housing

Windsor Manor Homes-The AAMU CDC is partnering with a private developer to design, build, and finance the construction of fifteen (15) high quality brick homes on scattered sites in an established neighborhood, known as Windsor Manor. The neighborhood is a safe and stable mixed-income neighborhood in north Huntsville. The homes will range from 1200 to 1500 square feet and sell for $90,000 to $120,000. Special features will include brick and vinyl siding (maintenance free), 3-4 bedrooms, 2 baths, 1-2 car garage, energy efficient appliances and ceiling fans in main rooms.

Service-Learning Network

To increase the involvement of faculty, students, and staff in Edmonton Heights through Service-Learning projects and neighborhood activities coordinated by the AAMU Service-Learning network.

Family Life Center

Facilitate leadership training workshops and activities to strengthen the capacity of the Edmonton Heights neighborhood for community development and empowerment, and implement a process for forming a neighborhood association to focus specifically on the economic revitalization of the community. Provides direct financial support for the Family Center to assist with operation costs and expand the Center's resources and programming.

 


AAMU Fraternity and Sorority Housing

The AAMU CDC and Alabama A&M University are developing a joint venture to provide quality housing for campus fraternities and sororities. The Alabama A&M University Fraternity/Sorority Row Housing Complex will be built on approximately 14.5 acres of university-owned land. The complex will contain eight (8) two story buildings with fourteen (14) two bedroom apartments each. The total size of the overall development is estimated at 135,300 square feet. Additionally, each house will contain a study lounge, kitchen, and an open atrium for casual dining or meetings, two small offices for a manager and support staff, and storage space. A large open courtyard will serve as an outdoor entertainment area and parking (300 spaces) will surround the periphery of the complex.

AmeriCorps*VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America)

The 2006-2007 goals of the AmeriCorps*VISTA program are to establish, maintain, and sustain two (2) neighborhood organizations. VISTA's will assist the CDC in organizing housing rehabilitation and neighborhood training programs, and support homeownership counseling, grant development, and other activities to advance the CDC. Additionally, VISTA members will work to expand the Alabama A&M University's Service Learning Network. For more information on AmeriCorps*VISTA: www.americorps.org
